By extending delivery capabilities to facilities in Canada, InsynQ is now able to serve Canadian-based subscribers with hosting solutions and secure data management under localized regulatory influence.

Does the Virtual Desktop have vulnerabilities, and if so, what are they?

The Virtual Desktop (remote desktop service) is potentially subject to any vulnerabilities which exist in the Microsoft technologies. For this reason, InsynQ also utilizes Citrix technologies to further secure desktop deliveries and access, and to secure the data during transmission. This is also why we designed the network the way we did, to minimize potential for intrusion as well as protecting subscribers from themselves and each other.

Is InsynQ’s protection different from an application where the data is hosted inside a software program, like Salesforce.com?

The protection is actually quite similar, and comes down to network and application architecture. For example, the database and application servers for SF are also in datacenters, secured with firewalls and connected via routers. These servers act similar to those found in any network. The difference is that with a hosted application solution you may have two different layers of authentication (if not more). There is the authentication with the network (your service login), and then the authentication of the application (your QuickBooks username and password, for example). Fundamentally, the security elements are quite similar, and the networks and services would be secured in a similar manner. This is another reasons why InsynQ uses Citrix technologies – to provide an additional layer of protection and control around the authentication process.

The other potential vulnerability comes with “file system” access. For example, with traditional desktop applications, you typically must have read/write permissions to the file system in order to open and utilize the data file. This also means that a user could, if they tried, delete files from a hard drive since they have permission. With a web-app framework like SF, you have no access to the “file system” per se; all your data is stored in their database. A user may have the right to delete a record in the database, but probably doesn’t have the ability to delete the entire database. This is one of the reasons why file system security and application views become very important.

Since InsynQ is hosting my data and apps, do they have the ability to view my data without permission?

This is one of the areas where InsynQ has spent a lot of time, developing and enforcing personnel and process policies which govern access to client stored data. Certainly, the engineers that perform backups, etc. have access to your files, but not in such a manner as to be able to open them and view their contents – they only have file system level access. Engineers that provision apps and profiles generally don’t have access to client data, but may in cases where a client requests that we perform a conversion or other such operation for them. InsynQ support personnel cannot view your data through their own systems. Viewing of data is only possible when a client accepts a shadow request from a support operator (but the client is ultimately controlling the session).

Some SaaS programs (Facebook, Mint.com) are considering or already using data mining, like Google. InsynQ’s Virtual Desktop as more like a safe deposit box at a bank, and SaaS as more like a coat check room at a restaurant in terms of security. This higher standard of privacy is one of the reasons to use InsynQ.

Aggregation of data, data mining and similar activities are certainly part of many SaaS and web-based application solutions, largely because the benchmark data is quite valuable and helps the service provider understand their market better. Some of the applications InsynQ hosts (or support integrations with) may aggregate or mine data, but that is a function of that application or service and their service agreement with subscribers. InsynQ DOES NOT participate in any such data aggregation, mining, or benchmarking activities with client-owned data. Client data is owned solely and exclusively by the client, and is considered to be absolutely private.
